What to Do When You Find Mold in Your Home or Office

Don’t panic. Mold in your home or office can be very frustrating and scary. The best thing you can do is educate yourself and figure out how to make sure that the mold does not return. Here are some steps on taking care of your mold problem:

  1. If you are around mold often, you can become very sick. If you are experiencing allergies, fatigue, headaches, sore throat, etc., you should go to the doctor and tell them you have been around mold and have mold in your home. They then will know exactly what to do. It is important that you are taking care of your health before anything else.
  2. You should have your home or office tested by a mold tester. You need to know what type of mold you are dealing with in your home. If is a large job you will need to hire a removal service. When the mold is cleaning up, they will need to again test it to make sure all the mold was removed.
  3. You need to identify the cause of the mold. This will then help you make sure that the mold will not return. Usually it is a leak in the roof, a pipe leak, or the humidity level on your home humidifier is set too high. These are common causes but there are definitely more.
  4. It is important you contact your insurance company and find out if mold removal is covered in your policy.
  5. Hire a professional to make sure the mold gets completely removed.
  6. After the mold has been removed, you can have the tester come back and air test for mold in your home or office. You do want to make sure that all the mold is removed, again for your health and safety.
  7. We highly recommend you are proactive in the future about mold prevention. A lot of people think that it won’t happen to them, until it does. Be sure you are always looking for ways to prevent mold in your home.
